Our History

The Idea of using large re-usable colorful fridge magnets for outdoor advertising started in Ontario, Canada in 1995. The inventors, Garry Cooper and Murray Wright saw an opportunity to cut letters, symbols and graphics from sheets of magnetic material and fluorescent vinyl and attach the shapes to a metal sign to provide changeable outdoor advertising. Other forms of curbside temporary signs mostly use a method of sliding letters into horizontal tracks to provide a sign message with numerous horizontal lines of type. With Magnetsigns, we can cut any colour of magnetic material into any shape or size that can be placed anywhere on the sign.

The benefits are huge! Eye-popping headlines, graphics and logos. Can't-miss messages that quickly transfer to passers-by and prompt action. NEED MILK or HELP WANTED. To Garry and Murray the benefits and potential was obvious, so they immediately applied for and later received patents. The natural choice for a name was Magnetsigns.

The Business began with Garry and Murray starting a local sign rental business in their home city of Barrie, Ontario. The concept seemed really simple, but presented many initial hurdles that have since been overcome. As they suspected, there was immediate interest in the signs from local businesses and they had no trouble renting their Magnetsigns. However, as the signs started going out, they were surprised as calls started coming in from people that could also see the business opportunity and couldn't wait to get involved. Garry and Murray decided to franchise Magnetsigns.

Franchising got off to a quick start during 1996 with 12 franchises being sold across Ontario in the first 12 months. The Magnetsigns concept spread quickly to Eastern and Western Canada and by 2000 there were over 35 franchises operating from coast-to-coast across Canada. In April 2001, the parent company Magnetsigns Advertising Inc. was sold and relocated to Camrose, Alberta.

The Future

Our Network has grown since 2001 into seven Canadian and US head office corporations called the Magnetsigns Group or Magnetsigns Corporation. As of March 2008, Magnetsigns Corporation had a total of 124 franchises, 107 franchises serving most major key markets across Canada (excluding Quebec) and 17 franchises serving various cities in the United States. Our head office is still located in Camrose, Alberta, Canada, our United States office is located in Las Vegas, Nevada and the manufacturing plant is located in Ontario, Canada. We have regional support staff located both in Canada and the United States.

The future looks very bright for Magnetsigns. We are involved in a lot of new product development, finding great ways to harness the value of our network of franchises, and implementing new and exciting technologies. Based on our Canadian franchising experience and our US research there is potential to establish at least 700 to 800 franchises in the United States. There is international interest in the Magnetsigns concept from beyond North America.
